Finland, often ranked the world’s happiest country, offers a distinctly calm and spacious travel experience in Northern Europe. Its clean air, pure waters and vast forests shape everyday life, while long summer days and snowy winters give the country its unmistakable rhythm. Safe, stable and refreshingly uncrowded, Finland is an easy destination for independent travel year‑round.
At the heart of southeastern Finland lies Lake Saimaa, the country’s largest lake and one of Europe’s most remarkable freshwater regions. Formed as the Ice Age glaciers retreated, Saimaa is a labyrinth of ridges, emerald forests and island‑dotted waterways, with nearly 15,000 kilometres of shoreline and 14,000 islands. Nature is close at hand, inviting exploration by bike, boat, canoe or on foot.

Set within Lake Saimaa and the Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark, the Mikkeli region offers one of the most authentic ways to experience Finnish Lakeland. Its six municipalities – Mikkeli, Hirvensalmi, Juva, Kangasniemi, Mäntyharju and Puumala – combine lively lakeside towns with tranquil rural scenery and some of Finland’s most iconic, unspoilt lake vistas.
Just a few hours from Helsinki, visitors can move effortlessly between market squares, forest trails, island archipelagos, lakeside saunas, cultural venues and the vast open‑water wilderness of Saimaa. The lake shapes not only the landscape but also the region’s unhurried rhythm of life.
What sets the Mikkeli region apart is the seamless interplay between nature, culture and everyday Finnish living. Wartime history meets contemporary design; manor‑house dining sits alongside cottage life and sauna rituals; world‑class concerts coexist with quiet moments on a silent shoreline. Rather than relying on headline landmarks, the region captivates with its atmosphere – a rare blend of space, authenticity and the understated luxury of Nordic nature. It is a place where visitors don’t just observe Finnish Lakeland; they truly feel it.
Lake Saimaa is also home to one of the world’s rarest mammals, the Saimaa ringed seal. Isolated from the sea thousands of years ago, it adapted uniquely to freshwater life and survives today only in this lake system. In summer, guided seal safaris offer a chance to observe these elusive animals resting on rocks or surfacing in quiet coves, accompanied by local guides who share stories of the lake’s natural heritage.

Product pageHuman presence around Lake Saimaa dates back thousands of years. Near Mikkeli, the Astuvansalmi Rock Paintings rise dramatically from the cliff face above the waterline. Created around 5,000 years ago, the ochre figures depict elk, boats and human forms, forming one of Northern Europe’s most significant prehistoric rock art sites.
Seen from the water, the rock formation itself resembles the profile of a sleeping face – a striking natural landmark often referred to as the “sleeping giant”. The site is best experienced by boat, which offers the best way to approach the cliffs and rock paintings from Lake Yövesi in their natural setting, revealing their full grandeur and atmosphere.
Food in the Mikkeli region follows the rhythm of nature. In late summer and autumn, the forests offer wild mushrooms, berries and herbs, while lakes provide fresh fish such as vendace – ingredients that have long shaped the local cuisine.
Throughout the region, chefs build their menus around seasonal ingredients, such as lake fish alongside wild herbs, forest harvests and local produce. Many restaurants are entitled to use the D.O. Saimaa designation label, a mark of origin that reflects purity, authenticity and quality of local food.
