What is there to do in Saimaa region?
Saimaa is Finland’s largest lake area and one of the country’s top nature destinations. In the Mikkeli region, you’ll find a mix of outdoor activities, culture, and relaxation.

When is the best time to visit?
The best time depends on what you want to experience: summer is the most popular time to visit, when we have warm weather and long daylight hours. Autumn is filled with beautiful colors and it is a great time for foraging berries and mushrooms. In the winter we have snowy landscapes with glistening ice, while the daylight is slim, the atmosphere is magical under dark starry sky. The spring time can be unpredictable weather-wise. However, ice starts to melt and nature starts to wake up, daylight hours are extending day by day.

Is tap water safe to drink?
Yes. Tap water is safe to drink everywhere in Finland.

Nature

Can I drink water directly from Lake Saimaa?
In many areas the water is very clean and can be drinkable, but it’s not generally recommended to drink directly from the lake without filtering or boiling.

Is it safe to swim in the lake?
Swimming in Saimaa is generally very safe, as long as you can swim. If you are not a confident swimmer, it is best to stay close to the shore. There are no dangerous fish or animals in the lake. However, diving headfirst is not recommended, as there may be rocks or uneven surfaces underwater.

Can I pick berries and mushrooms in nature?
Yes. Finland’s “Everyman’s Rights” allow everyone, including visitors, to pick wild berries and mushrooms freely. Just remember pick only edible berries and mushrooms and to keep a respectful distance from homes and private yards (at least 150 metres).

Is it safe to go into the forest?
Yes. Forests in Saimaa are generally very safe to explore, especially along marked trails that make navigation easy. The region is sparsely populated, so you may also encounter wildlife such as hares, foxes or elk. Larger predators like bears, wolves and wolverines exist but are rarely seen. Making some noise while walking, such as talking, is usually enough to avoid surprising wildlife and helps keep animals at a distance.

Lake Saimaa covers about 4,279 km², making it Finland’s largest lake and one of the biggest in Europe.

What are "Everyman's Rights"?
They are the right to freely enjoy nature, including walking, camping temporarily, swimming, and picking berries – as long as you respect nature and private property.

Visit the Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark and its visitor centres, which explain the area’s Ice Age history and rock formations.

Do I need to be aware of any local rules or wildlife?
During your visit, follow Everyman’s Rights: you can enjoy nature, but don’t disturb or damage it, respect wildlife, especially the Saimaa ringed seal (keep distance) and be careful with fire safety and waste in outdoor areas.

What are typical local dishes in the area?
Muikku (vendace) is the region’s signature lake fish, Kalakukko – fish baked inside rye bread is a typical dish in the Savonia area, Mustikkarättänä (Blueberry rye-pie) is a local dessert of the Mikkeli area. Typical dishes in the Saimaa area include fresh lake fish and simple seasonal locally harvested produce.

What kind of berries and mushrooms do people eat?
Local berries, such as blueberries (bilberries), lingonberries, cloudberries and mushrooms such as chanterelles and porcini can be picked from forests in the area. Berries and mushrooms are also sold in market places, which are often picked fresh. Berries and mushrooms are often used in pies, jams, or savory dishes.

What does D.O. Saimaa mean?
It stands for “Designation of Origin Saimaa”. A quality label showing the product is locally made in the Saimaa region using high standards and sustainable methods.

Where and how can I spot the Saimaa ringed seal?
Saimaa ringed seal can be spotted during summer season. Guided boat or kayaking tours are best to guide near their habitat. Tips for the tour is to stay quiet and watch from a distance, early morning or sunset are best times for spotting.

What are the top historic sights in the region?
There are many local museums and heritage sites around Mikkeli. The top historic sites include Headquarters Museum & Muisti Centre of War and Peace and Astuvansalmi rock paintings.

What are the best places for panoramic views and hiking?
A famous viewpoint over Lake Saimaa in Mikkeli area is Neitvuori Hill. Hiking is best done in hiking routes and national parks such as Hiiden Polut trails – scenic hiking routes around Neitvuori, Linnansaari National Park – islands, lakes, and nature trails, Forest routes like Sydänmaa for varied landscapes.

Are there options for bike touring and walking?
Yes. The region offers many cycling routes, hiking trails, and walking paths along lakes, forests, and villages. Bike rentals and marked trails are widely available.
