Explore the natural highlights of the Mikkeli region, from Repovesi National Park and the nearby Linnansaari National Park, each offering distinctive ways to experience the landscapes of Lake Saimaa region.
Discover the very best of Lake Saimaa – from national parks and ancient rock art to panoramic viewpoints and island-dotted waters. Everything is within easy reach, whether you explore on foot, kayak, boat, or car.
The story of the Ice Age is written across the Lake Saimaa landscape. In the heart of Mikkeli, the city’s iconic landmark Naisvuori Observation Tower rises from a striking mica gneiss hill, offering sweeping views over the city and the vast, shimmering lake beyond.
Just a short walk from the centre, the Kaihunharju esker reveals the region’s glacial heritage, its narrow ridge gently framed by water on both sides, forming one of the area’s most distinctive Ice Age landscapes.
Further afield, the rugged bedrock fissure of Rakokallio and the dramatic cliffs of Neitvuori Hill open up vast views over Lake Luonteri, inviting visitors to pause and take in the scale and silence of the landscape shaped by ancient forces.
From Mikkeli, it is also easy to reach the waters of Lake Yövesi, where a boat journey leads to the legendary Astuvansalmi rock paintings. This cliffside gallery, with more than 80 ancient images, is best experienced on a guided excursion across the open waters of Lake Saimaa.
From Mikkeli, two very different national parks invite you into the heart of Lakeland nature – each offering its own way to experience the landscapes shaped by water, forest and ice. Together, they reveal the diversity of Saimaa in its purest form – from rugged forest cliffs and hidden inland lakes to vast open waters and island silence – all within easy reach of Mikkeli.
Repovesi National Park is a world of dramatic rock cliffs, deep forest silence and mirror-like lakes. Here you can hike along well-marked trails, climb to scenic viewpoints, cross swaying suspension bridges and paddle through calm waterways that weave between ancient rock formations. In summer, cycling routes and canoe trails connect the park to nearby Mäntyharju, making it easy to combine land and water experiences in a single day immersed in wilderness.
Linnansaari National Park offers a completely different rhythm – an open labyrinth of islands, wide lake horizons and peaceful archipelago nature in the middle of Lake Saimaa. It is one of the best places to encounter the rare Saimaa ringed seal, gliding quietly through its natural habitat. In summer, boats and guided excursions depart from nearby harbours such as Oravi and Rantasalmi, taking visitors across open water to island trails, sandy shores and traditional lakeside landscapes. In winter, marked ice routes open a rare opportunity to cross the frozen lake on foot, ski or snowshoe.
The Puumala archipelago, with its winding waterways, rocky islets and sandy shores, is a living lake landscape shaped by ice, water and time. Take a boat trip or paddle to Rokansaari, an island paradise with a fine sandy beach, or join a guided excursion to spot the rare Saimaa ringed seal. The archipelago is also home to ospreys, which you may glimpse on guided boat or kayaking trips.
The best way to experience the archipelago from land is to cycle the 60‑kilometre Puumala Archipelago Route. Cycle along the Lietvesi Scenic Road and pause for a break – or stay overnight – at Pistohiekka Resort or Sahanlahti Resort, both offering some of the most beautiful views over Lake Saimaa.
