Mölkky – a Finnish summer classic

A way of life shaped by tradition and nature

Life in Saimaa is deeply connected to lakes, forests and the changing seasons. Summer evenings often revolve around the lakeside sauna, where heat, swimming and shared meals by the water set the rhythm of the day.

Weekends bring people together for simple pleasures: grilling by the shore, playing yard games, fishing, or spending time at the cottage. From an early age, life is lived outdoors – moving naturally between water, forest and home.

Stillness by the shore

Midsummer magic

Seasonal traditions remain an important part of life. Midsummer is celebrated at the lake with bonfires, sauna, swimming and long gatherings that stretch deep into the bright summer night.

Old customs and playful beliefs around Midsummer still linger. The direction in which the Midsummer bonfire leaned could hint where future love might be found. And it’s said that if you pick seven wildflowers and place them under your pillow on Midsummer night, you would see your future partner in your dream. Worth a try, perhaps.

Independence Day and Christmas traditions

In Saimaa region, seasonal traditions mark the shift from bright summer to the calm of winter.

On Finnish Independence Day (6 December), homes are lit with candles. Two candles are traditionally placed by the window in the evening, and many follow the Presidential Independence Day Reception on TV – a nationally followed event known for its guest list and elegant evening wear.

Christmas is a time of family, rest and quiet togetherness. It is celebrated with traditional food, sauna, Christmas church services and lighting candles for loved ones who have passed. At home, candlelight and winter stillness create a calm, intimate atmosphere.
