Formed around 11,400–11,300 years ago by powerful meltwater streams flowing beneath glaciers, this sharp, scenic ridge offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into Finland’s geological past.

Today, Kaihunharju lies close to the city yet feels like a peaceful nature escape. The area features the well-marked Kaihu Trail, a network of paths perfect for exploring the ridge and its surroundings. The trail connects conveniently to nearby attractions, including the Urpola Nature Centre (Saimaa Geopark Visitor Centre) and the impressive Pursiala pothole, a natural formation carved by ancient glacial waters.

Explore the Kaihu Trail

The Kaihu Trail is a 2.5 km circular route suitable for visitors of all ages and fitness levels. The walk takes about 35 minutes and combines sections of paved paths with gently rolling, forested terrain.
