Neitvuori is one of the highest scenic viewpoints in South Savo, rising to 184 metres above sea level and standing around 110 metres above the surface of Lake Saimaa. Located in Anttola, Mikkeli, it offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the entire Lake Saimaa region, opening out over the intricate island labyrinth of Luonteri.
From the summit, the landscape stretches endlessly across forested ridges, open water and countless islands shaped by the Ice Age. On clear days, Neitvuori reveals the full beauty of Saimaa’s fragmented archipelago, one of Finland’s most iconic national landscapes.
Historically, the hill was known as Hiidenvuori, a name linked to ancient folklore and sacred natural sites. Its current name, Neitvuori (“Maiden’s Hill”), comes from a legend dating back to the Great Northern War in the early 18th century, when a young maiden is said to have fallen from the cliff while fleeing invading forces. Traces of the older name still live on in nearby place names and local storytelling.
Today, Neitvuori is a popular hiking destination and a symbolic landmark of the Hiidenmaa trails. The climb to the summit rewards visitors with a dramatic contrast of quiet forest paths and suddenly opening horizons, where the vast, winding waters of Lake Saimaa unfold beneath your feet.
