Experience traditional winter fishing on Lake Saimaa and enjoy a seasonal Finnish meal
Head out onto the frozen Lake Saimaa for an authentic winter fishing experience inspired by traditions that are still part of everyday life in the region. Together with your local guide, you will walk across the ice, explore the peaceful winter scenery and discover how fishing continues throughout the coldest months of the Finnish winter.
Try traditional ice fishing for yourself by drilling a hole through the ice and lowering your line into the waters below. During the burbot spawning season, local fishermen also use traps beneath the ice. If our traps are in place, we will check them together and discover what Lake Saimaa has provided.
During our time on the frozen lake, we stop for a warming hot drink and a traditional Finnish cinnamon bun - a simple but essential part of a winter day outdoors.
Winter fishing is all about patience, but it also creates a direct connection between the lake and the food on your plate. After fishing, we return to our atmospheric old log house to warm up and enjoy a hearty traditional burbot soup. The meal is prepared by Ilkka, our chef and fisherman, using locally caught fish and ingredients sourced from nearby producers.
This Lake Saimaa winter fishing experience combines hands-on fishing, local traditions, peaceful winter nature and seasonal Finnish food — offering an authentic way to experience life by the lake in winter.
