Experience the winter landscape of Lake Saimaa and discover the ancient rock art in a unique setting
Join your local guide for a guided snowshoe hike through the winter landscapes of Lake Saimaa to the remarkable Astuvansalmi rock paintings, created more than 6,000 years ago. The route winds along peaceful forest trails and, when ice conditions allow, partly across the frozen waters of Lake Saimaa.
At Astuvansalmi, there is plenty of time to discover the ancient rock art and its fascinating figures. Your guide will share stories about the paintings, their possible origins and meanings, as well as the history of Lake Saimaa and the Ice Age landscape that surrounds them. During winter, the frozen lake provides a unique viewpoint of the rock formation, including its distinctive human-shaped profile.
A warm drink is included and enjoyed during the snowshoeing trip.
Optional add-on: A handmade seasonal packed lunch prepared with local ingredients can be added to your experience and enjoyed along the way.
This Lake Saimaa snowshoeing experience is suitable for anyone with a basic level of fitness. Snowshoes make moving through snowy terrain easier, and the hike is taken at a relaxed pace, with plenty of opportunities to stop, take in the scenery and enjoy the peaceful winter surroundings.
Please dress in warm, weather-appropriate clothing and wear sturdy footwear suitable for winter conditions.
