Help Saimaa Seals on an eLyly Safari

Help protect the endangered Saimaa ringed seal on a unique winter conservation safari in the Puumala archipelago. Travel across the snowy landscape of Lintusalo Island on a quiet, zero-emission eLyly electric snow scooter with a local seal guide, then help build a man-made snow drift that a seal may use for a resting or pup nest later in winter.

Organised by Nestorinranta and LakelandGTE Nature Services in close cooperation with Metsähallitus, the Finnish authority responsible for wildlife conservation, the safari follows official guidelines for creating snow drifts for Saimaa ringed seals and the principles of seal-friendly tourism. The experience is part of the Our Common Saimaa Ringed Seal LIFE project, which works to improve the conservation status of this rare species through practical conservation measures and increased cooperation.

Private safaris are available on request from 10–31 January, subject to suitable snow and ice conditions and guide availability. The experience lasts approximately 2 hours plus an outdoor meal and is available for groups of 2–5 people. Participants must be at least 12 years old, physically fit enough for snow pushing, and weigh no more than 110 kg. No driving licence is required, and the guide provides instructions, checks the route and ice conditions in advance, and carries the necessary safety equipment. Because seal nesting locations are confidential, all participants are required to sign a confidentiality agreement.

The price includes the eLyly snow scooter, helmet and safety vest, snow pushers, guiding, a hot drink, a locally prepared fish soup lunch at the departure point, and photographs taken by the guide. Dress in warm, weatherproof layered winter clothing, avoid studded footwear, and bring goggles or sunglasses for wind protection.
