Rock Art Visitor Centre

Rock Art Visitor Centre Astuva in Ristiina brings rock paintings to life, showcasing one of Northern Europe’s most remarkable prehistoric art sites: the Astuvansalmi rock paintings.

Rock Art Visitor Centre Astuva in Ristiina is a gateway to one of Northern Europe’s most remarkable prehistoric art sites: the Astuvansalmi rock paintings. Located in the Lake Saimaa region, the centre introduces visitors to a cultural landscape that dates back thousands of years, when Stone Age hunter-gatherers painted elk, human figures and boats onto the sheer rock faces along the lake.

The exhibition combines archaeology, storytelling and modern immersive technology to bring this ancient world to life. Interactive displays and 3D models—such as reconstructions of amber jewellery found in the area—help visitors understand both the everyday life and spiritual world of the people who once inhabited Saimaa’s shores. The experience also explores how the paintings were discovered, studied by researchers such as Pekka Sarvas and Pekka Kivikäs, and how they are preserved today for future generations.

Astuva is part of the wider network of Saimaa rock art sites and the international Prehistoric Rock Art Trails, placing Astuvansalmi in a broader European context of ancient visual culture. The exhibitions also highlight the unique location of the paintings: a dramatic lakeside cliff that, when viewed from the water, resembles a sleeping giant—long considered a sacred and mysterious place.

Beyond the indoor exhibition, outdoor information boards and trails extend the experience into the surrounding landscape, where visitors can explore historical routes such as the Count Brahe’s trail and the wider cultural scenery of Ristiina.

From the Ristiina boat dock near the visitor centre, you can embark on a boat trip to visit the Astuvansalmi Rock Paintings in summertime.
