Puumalansalmi is one of the main waterways of Lake Saimaa, where northern and southern routes meet. At its narrowest point, the strait is crossed by one of Finland’s longest road bridges – nearly 800 metres in length – offering striking views over the surrounding lake landscape.
The bridge itself is part of the experience. A scenic lift takes visitors up to the top, where a viewing platform and café provide a unique vantage point 31 metres above the water. From here, you can truly appreciate the maze-like character of Lake Saimaa, with its countless islands and open stretches of water.
Below the bridge, the harbour area is lively during the summer months. Boats, paddlers and travellers gather here, and you can often see vessels passing through the channel or pilots boarding ships navigating the Saimaa waterways. The area also serves as a gateway to nearby nature routes, including the Saimaa Seal Trail, which showcases the region’s rugged cliffs, sandy shores and geological formations.
The landscape around Puumalansalmi is shaped by ancient fracture zones in the bedrock, later deepened by glacial erosion during the Ice Age. Today, these formations create the deep channels and intricate waterways that define Lake Saimaa.
Whether you stop for the views, explore the harbour or continue into nature, Puumalansalmi offers a memorable way to experience the scale and character of Saimaa.
