Pien-Toijola Open-Air Museum

Travel back in time at the Pien-Toijola Peasant Museum in Ristiina, one of Finland’s most authentic and well-preserved historic farmyards.

Recognized as a nationally significant cultural heritage site, this unique open-air museum offers a rare glimpse into traditional rural life from centuries past.

Located in the peaceful village of Toijola, about 20 km from Ristiina towards Puumala, Pien-Toijola features an exceptional collection of 28 original buildings dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. Remarkably, all structures remain in their original locations, forming a complete and atmospheric farmstead.

A Living Piece of History

The farm has been in the possession of the Toijonen family since 1672, and it has been carefully preserved to reflect its appearance as late as the 1950s. The main house, built in 1803 and renovated in 1880, stands at the heart of the yard, surrounded by barns, a smokehouse, and other traditional log buildings.

Every item on display was once used on the farm, making the museum a deeply authentic and personal window into everyday life in rural Finland. Some of the oldest buildings, including barns and the smoke sauna, date back to the 1700s.

Thanks to its historical accuracy and unique setting, Pien-Toijola has also served as a filming location for several Finnish movies.

Beyond its cultural significance, the museum is set on a fascinating rocky landscape of veined gneiss, visible throughout the area. Visitors can spot intriguing natural features in the exposed bedrock, including rounded inclusions formed over a billion years ago during the Earth’s geological development.

Pien-Toijola offers an immersive and peaceful experience for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or simply exploring a beautifully preserved rural setting, this open-air museum is a destination not to be missed.
