Pattoi in Juva offers a rare combination of cultural heritage and nature. This well-preserved heritage farm, built in 1873, invites visitors to step into traditional rural life, while a nearby nature trail leads deeper into the surrounding landscape.
The Pattoi Heritage Farm has remained almost unchanged for generations. Life here was based on self-sufficiency, with farming, fishing and forestry continuing in a traditional way well into the late 20th century. Today, the farm is preserved as a museum estate, with its buildings, courtyard and objects all original – and still without electricity or modern utilities.
From the farmyard, the Pattoi Nature Trail begins, forming a scenic 1.3 km route through a protected natural area. The trail follows an old winter road that once connected the farm to the shores of Lake Jukajärvi and beyond. It can be walked in either direction, linking the heritage site with the lakeside landscape.
Along the way, the trail passes boardwalk sections, rest areas and two lean-to shelters, where you can stop to enjoy a fire and the peaceful surroundings. The route offers views over traditional farmland as well as untouched spruce forest, wetlands and impressive ant hills. In the quiet of the forest, you can hear birdsong and the wind moving through the trees – a reminder of how closely life here has always been tied to nature.
Marked with Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark signs, the trail is easy to follow and suitable for families. Together, the heritage farm and nature trail create a complete experience of history, landscape and the rhythms of traditional life in the Lake Saimaa region.
