The Green Gold Cultural Route is a 250 km cycling journey through South Savo, from Mäntyharju to Punkaharju via Ristiina, Puumala, Sulkava and Savonlinna. It leads you along quiet backroads into the heart of Finnish forest and lake landscapes, where culture, nature and history meet.
Along the way, the route connects 16 carefully chosen sites that reveal the region’s deep relationship with the forest – from ancient rock paintings and traditional villages to manor estates, scenic ridge roads and lively lakeside towns. Highlights such as Punkaharju ridge, the island world of Puumala and Astuvansalmi rock art make the journey both visually stunning and culturally rich.
Cycling here is varied and relaxed, mostly on peaceful rural roads with plenty of places to stop, taste local food and stay overnight by the lake. For an added dimension, an optional audio guide brings the landscape to life with stories rooted in Finnish forest culture and mythology.
More than a cycling route, the Green Gold Cultural Route is a journey through stories, silence and scenery – where the forest is always part of the experience.
