LUSTO - MORE THAN A MUSEUM

27.04.2009

The national forest museum Lusto is a museum and science centre of international importance. It represents a must for anyone visiting the south-eastern part of Finland. Lusto is situated in Punkaharju, one of the most spectacular landscapes of the country. The area is famous especially for the Punkaharju Ridge, a seven-kilometer ice-age esker flanked by lakes.

Lusto - meaning the annual ring of the tree in Finnish - appeals highly interesting for visitors of all ages. Through its exhibitions, events, work demonstrations and many other means, it shows how the forest has always formed the cornerstone of Finnish culture and the basis of livelihood for Finns.

The permanent exhibition is thematically arranged and focuses on the development of Finnish forests and the global importance of forests, the bounties of the forest, working in the forest, shaping forest materials into various products, new potential uses of wood, forestry and wood-processing exports, and Finns' relationship with forests.

The Room of Silence - part of the permanent exhibition and displayed in the Finnish pavilion at EXPO 2000 the World Exhibition in Hanover - offers an unrivalled virtual nature experience.

Children have been taken into consideration in several parts of the exhibition: one of them is the Children's Tree, a dream place for the youngest members of the family to play in. Visitors of all ages can try their hand at various crafts in Woodpecker's Workshop at the foot of the Children's Tree.

One of the temporary exhibitions, going on until next October, is about the Finnhorse. This jubilee exhibition is organized in honor of the Centenary of the Finnhorse. It is the only native horse breed in Finland and among the fastest and most versatile cold bloods in the world. Until the beginning of the 60's it was mainly used for agricultural work but nowadays only 500 horses are used as work horses.
