NEWSTHE 7 NATURE WONDERS OF THE WORLD: LAKE SAIMAA AMONG THE CANDIDATES24.04.2009 Lake Saimaa has made its way to the second round of the New7Wonders competition which includes, in its second phase, 77 nature destinations in all the continents of the world. When the competition started, the candidates were all together 261 from 222 countries. Lake Saimaa in south-eastern Finland measures approximately 4,400 square km. It is the largest lake in Finland and the fourth-largest in Europe. It was formed by glacial melting at the end of the Ice Age. Most of the lake is spotted with islands, and narrow canals divide the lake into many parts.Among the candidates Lake Saimaa is competing with can be mentioned for example Grand Canyon, Mount Everest and the Niagara falls. The vote of The 7 nature wonders of the world takes place in internet. The non-profitable organization New7Wonders expect more than one billion people to participate in the vote. It's possible to vote until July 7th. In July, the expert panel will choose the 21 finalists. The winners of the last vote, organized in 2007, were: The Great Wall of China, Petra, Chichén Itzá , the Statue of Christ Redeemer in Rio De Janeiro, the Colosseum, Machu Picchu and the Taj Mahal.
