The cultural events are numerous and plenty of them have nothing to envy on a worldwide scale. Along with the events, there are activities which are simply a must in the Saimaa lake region. Here are some hints for everyone interested in culture and history.
The culturally rich summer can start with a visit at the Retretti Art Centre, in the breathtaking Punkaharju area, open from June 3rd until August 29th. Each year, it offers a world-class art exhibition in a unique location in the cave under earth. This year, the main artist of Retretti is the exceptional Finnish female artist Helene Schjerfbeck.
Once in Punkaharju, one can't lose the Forest Museum Lusto, the only museum of its kind in Finland and worth visiting even for its architecture.
In Kerimäki, close to Punkaharju and Savonlinna, the amazing wooden church, biggest in the world, waits for its' admirers.
