NEWSSULKAVA WORLD MASTER ROWING COMPETITION 8 – 11 JULY08.06.2010 Sulkava Rowing Race is a unique event in the heart of the Finnish Lakeland. In the old times, people in the lake region built long, wooden rowing boats in order to cross the lakes and get to the church on Sundays. These boats, fitting 15 persons, were called "church boats" for this reason. Nowadays, the church boats, or "long boats" as they are literally called in English, are living their renaissance and along the summer there are many church boat rowing competitions organized in the Eastern part of Finland.
The Sulkava Rowing Race is certainly the most famous of them all. In its 43- years-old history, it has grown from a tiny happening (there were 38 participants the first year!) to one of the most massive events in the lake region in summer time.
This year, the Sulkava Rowing Race has a double function as also the World Master Rowing competition is organized in the same days. The World Master Rowing competition is organized on July 8th (2000 meters) and 11th (60 km). During the four days, days and nights are filled with happenings: the rowing competitions themselves - with many different categories - and entertainment from prize givings to concerts, dances and BBQs.
Participating is possible for everyone - there are many categories open to anyone - but it is certainly as much fun just to watch the races! The lakes in the Sulkava area are among the most beautiful of the lake region and the little village of Sulkava itself is worth a visit with examples of old wooden buildings, among them the church, cafeterias and a Marimekko outlet.
