Local food culture can be found all over the Saimaa area. The forests and the clean water are a huge resource for finding berries, mushrooms, fish and game. These ingredients are typically used in the kitchens both in the Saimaa area top restaurants and farmstays.

At Lomamokkila and Tynkkylän lomaniemi, being an example of the latter, the visitor can enjoy tasty home-cooked meals whereas there's also a good number of restaurants where food can be described as extraordinary and where the environment underlines the gastronomic experience-

Savonlinna's best restaurant is without doubt the brewery restaurant Huvila, a former mental hospital, built in a lovely wooden house in 1912, and today a stylish yet cosy restaurant. The owners like to describe the food as Scandinavian, made with local ingredients. The wine list comprises great wines from the Old Continent. And surely the own production of beer please the fans of British style drinks.

In Anttolanhovi, some 30 kilometres from Mikkeli, the hotel's restaurant is guided by a young chef whose curriculum comprises top restaurants. And in summer time, the Finnish star chef Maulavirta cooks regularly in Anttolanhovi. Moreover, Anttolanhovi's old manor house is opened in summer time as an A la carte restaurant offering an excellent Russian cuisine.

The Tertti Manor lies just next to Mikkeli and is a perfect example of a functioning farm and a restaurant where the visitors can let themselves get carried away by a delicious cuisine based on local ingredients. The manor house acts still like the home of the Pylkkänen family, owner of Tertti for five generations, wherefore the unique setting of the restaurant turns the visit into an unforgettable experience.

Local ingredients are used also in the rich lunch buffet which can be enjoyed each day at Kenkävero in Mikkeli. The food is traditional and inspired by nouvelle cuisine. Salty pies and lovely cakes can be bought in the cafeteria in case the visitors wish to have a smaller snack.

Kekkolan Kartano, few kilometres away from Mikkeli, is a beautiful, wooden manor house offering both romantic rooms and an outstanding kitchen. Many ingredients come from the own garden and the nearby situated lakes and forests.

Finally, Holvi is a restaurant in the very heart of the city of Mikkeli. Its brick vaults, giving also the Finnish name to the restaurant, create a distinctive scenery for this restaurant, with a beautiful lighting and a special atmosphere. The first-rate cuisine is a combination of high quality and innovation.
