The weather in Finland and the VisitSaimaa region is characterised by a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. On the hottest days of the summer temperatures can exceed +30°C, while on the coldest winter days the mercury can fall to -30°C. The Finnish summer is famous throughout the world for its white nights. On the longest days of the year around Midsummer the sun barely dips below the horizon.
The crystal-clear lake water is warm and pleasant in summertime, making Saimaa ideal for swimming and beach holidays. In autumn the lake scenery is transformed by the magnificent colours of the foliage reflecting off the water. The lakes usually freeze over in November or December, creating bright fields of ice that are ideal for winter activities.
